City of Chicago Plumbing Code: Changing of the Guard

On April 10, 2019, the City of Chicago issued an announcement that the City of Chicago will have the first comprehensive revisions to the building code in 70 years and will make construction in Chicago more affordable and sustainable by expanding options to design and build with a wider range of materials and technologies.

Chicago is now among the first major jurisdictions in the U.S. to adopt the 2018 International Building Code.

The ordinance will take effect gradually. An update to the Chicago Energy Conservation Code, as required by State law, is scheduled to take effect June 1, 2019. The new building and building rehabilitation codes will be published in a user-friendly format by the International Code Council this fall.

The new code would become optional December 1, 2019, and become mandatory for new permit applications on August 1, 2020.
